A coach teaching a circle of students in gis on the mat

Raised in Stockton, trained under Ares

Your first roll is the scariest five minutes in the room.

Kalani "Coach K" Foster's was worse. Kalani's first roll went badly. A 115 pound kid broke his arm. Nobody had taught Kalani to tap. He came back the next day.

He grew up in Stockton, joined an MMA gym as a teenager to stay off the streets, and earned his black belt under Osvaldo "Queixinho" Moizinho, a co-founder of Ares BJJ. This is his gym, and here you learn to tap before you ever roll.

Questions before your first class

What people ask before they come in

I'm out of shape and I've never trained. Is that OK?

Yes. You learn how to tap before you roll, and beginners are paired with partners who go easy while you learn. Coach K's own first roll ended with a broken arm because nobody taught him to tap. That's why tapping comes first here.

Will my kid get hurt, or turn into a bully?

Coach K coaches the kids himself, and you're welcome to watch. Kids learn to tap before they roll, so they always know how to say stop. The point is a kid who's steadier and kinder, not meaner.

How much does it cost?

Your first class is free, and no card is needed. Membership prices aren't posted online. Coach K goes over the options with you at the gym after your free class, or you can call or text (209) 889-5800 and ask first.

What should I wear to my first class?

A t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweats with no zippers or pockets. Bring water. You don't need a gi for your first class.

First class free · No card

Start this week, not next year.

Another school year goes by and your kid's still on the couch. You keep meaning to start, and the 7pm class keeps losing to the drive home. Nothing changes, because nothing started.
