Who trains at 5am

This is your class if...

  • You've meant to start for a year, and you're out of shape. Start anyway.
  • Your evenings belong to work, your kids or the drive home.
  • You've trained in the gi before and want a home gym without the egos.

Before your first class

"I've never trained before. Is it OK if I'm out of shape?"

Nobody wants to be the new one who gets hurt in front of everyone. Coach K was that guy. Kalani's first roll went badly. A 115 pound kid broke his arm. Nobody had taught Kalani to tap.

So you wait until you're in better shape. Then the 7pm class comes around, the day's already gone, and you skip it again.

Questions adults ask

Before you step on the mat

Do I need to be in shape first?

No. You get in shape by training, not before. You learn to tap first, and beginners are paired with partners who go easy while you learn.

Can a beginner take the 5am class?

Yes. The 5am and 6pm classes both take beginners. Coach K shows you how to tap first, then pairs you with a partner.

How much does it cost?

Your first class is free, with no card needed. Membership prices aren't posted online. Coach K goes over the options with you at the gym after the free class, or call or text (209) 889-5800 to ask first.

Do I need a gi?

Not for your first class. Wear a t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweats with no zippers or pockets. Ask Coach K about a gi after your free class.

What is Combat Conditioning?

Combat Conditioning and Open Mat runs Monday to Thursday at 6am, right after the 5am class. It's included with membership. Ask Coach K what a session covers.
